A Call for Unity at CANYS

Albany, NY — October 4, 2024, Denise L. Kolivoski, MBA, Executive Director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), delivered an inspiring address at the annual CANYS (Council on Addiction of New York State) meeting held in Albany. Her message, “Recovery is Stronger Together,” resonated with attendees from across the state, urging for increased unity and collaboration in the fight against addiction and substance abuse.

Speaking to a room filled with CANYS affiliates and several attending virtually, Kolivoski emphasized the importance of community and shared efforts in tackling the growing challenges of alcohol, tobacco, drug, and gambling addiction that plague local communities, regions, and the state. CANYS, which represents approximately 50 member affiliates, has been a pivotal force in addressing these issues statewide.

“Now more than ever, we must stand together as a united front against the epidemic of addiction,” Kolivoski declared. “Recovery is not something to be done in isolation. It takes a network of support, empathy, and shared resources. We are stronger when we face these challenges together.”

CANYS, a network of addiction councils throughout New York, has been instrumental in raising awareness and providing solutions for substance abuse issues at the local, regional, and state levels. With a mission to build healthier communities through education, advocacy, and service, CANYS plays a crucial role in shaping policies and support structures for individuals and families affected by addiction.

Denise Kolivoski’s Vision for a Unified Approach
As Executive Director of NCADD, Kolivoski has long been an advocate for collaborative efforts between local agencies, state organizations, and community leaders. In her speech, she underscored the critical need for both increased awareness and sustained action to combat addiction.

“Every person on the path to recovery is a testament to the power of community support. Let this gathering remind us that addiction doesn’t discriminate, and neither should we when offering help and resources,” she added.

The CANYS Board of Directors, led by President Bill Bowman of Jefferson County, continues to champion statewide efforts for prevention, treatment, and recovery services in line with Kolivoski’s vision of collective action.
